What Tax Hardship Center offers

The company lists IRS and state tax services for individuals and businesses (company site):

•         Collection help: installment agreements, offer in compromise, Currently Not Collectible status, penalty abatement, innocent spouse relief and statute of limitations reviews.

•         Enforcement problems: IRS letters, bank levies, wage garnishment, levy releases and tax lien removal.

•         Audit defense and representation.

•         Compliance work: tax preparation, unfiled returns, tax planning, bookkeeping and payroll tax relief.

Its process has four steps: a free consultation, a review of your IRS and state records, a strategy and program match, and then resolution and follow-through. It says it can get a case "through phase one in 7-10 days."

The site says its team includes "IRS-Certified Enrolled Agents, CPA's, Attorneys." It has no team page, and the staff named on its About page in customer testimonials have titles such as Senior Tax Analyst and Tax Preparer. We did not find a named CPA or attorney on the pages we checked (About page). The IRS licenses enrolled agents; it doesn't "certify" them.

How much does Tax Hardship Center cost?

Tax Hardship Center does not post prices. Its homepage says "No Resolution, No Fee," "you only pay when we deliver results," and "If you don't think we fulfilled our promise we're happy to refund your fee." It also states that "Timelines and results depend on your facts, documents, and IRS processing."

Third-party review sites report a two-part fee. These figures are not on the company's site, so treat them as estimates to confirm:

LendEDU

Several review sites describe a 14-day money-back guarantee, and the company itself referred to "its 14-day money-back guarantee" when it answered a March 2026 BBB complaint. We did not find the written terms on its website. Money Done Right says the refund must be requested "within 14 days from the start of the Investigation phase" (Money Done Right).

If the investigation fee is charged up front, ask the company how that fits with "No Resolution, No Fee," and get both answers in your contract.

The reviews split into two groups. Positive reviews from mid-2026 praise individual staff members and describe balances that were resolved or reduced. Negative reviews describe calls that went unreturned, refund requests, and payments of several thousand dollars that customers say produced no result. One BBB reviewer reports paying $4,150 without a resolution. Trustpilot reviewers describe payments between $3,500 and $9,500 with no outcome. These are individual customer accounts that we could not verify.

On Trustpilot, the company had replied to 41% of negative reviews, typically more than a month later.

BBB rating and complaints

The BBB rates Tax Hardship Center A- and lists no alerts or government actions (BBB profile). Its complaints page showed 55 complaints in the past three years and 30 closed in the past 12 months. By type, 34 were about customer service, 12 about service or repair, 6 about the product and 3 about billing. The company answered 46 and resolved 9; none were listed as unanswered (BBB complaints).

Recent complaints in 2026 involve refund requests, a chargeback, and a customer the company said did not qualify for a settlement. In at least one case the company says it issued a refund under its 14-day guarantee.

The company's About page says it holds a "BBB A+ rating." The BBB profile showed A- when we checked.

Is Tax Hardship Center legit?

Yes, in the sense that it is a registered company with a public address, a named principal, BBB accreditation since 2018 and years of customer reviews. We found no FTC, state attorney general or court enforcement action naming Tax Hardship Center LLC in our searches as of October 29, 2026, and the BBB lists none. We could not query the CFPB complaint database, and tax resolution is not a product the CFPB usually tracks.

Being legitimate is different from being a good fit. The record shows these points to weigh:

Pros

Cons

BBB accredited since 2018 with an A- rating and no alerts

Prices not published; fees reported only by third parties

Free 15 to 30 minute consultation

BBB customer score of 3.55 and Trustpilot score of 2.9

Covers IRS and state tax problems, including levies, liens and audits

Repeated complaints about communication and refunds

Refund guarantee described by the company in a BBB response

Written guarantee terms not found on its website

Serves all 50 states remotely

No CPA or attorney named on the pages we checked

Answers BBB complaints; none listed as unanswered

Its own site gives different years in business (2012, "14+," "20+") and says A+ while the BBB shows A-

For context, regulators do act against tax relief firms. In June 2026 the FTC and Nevada settled with the operators of a different company, American Tax Service, over alleged IRS impersonation and "pennies on the dollar" promises (FTC). That case does not involve Tax Hardship Center. It shows why checking any firm is worth the time.

How Tax Hardship Center compares with similar firms

We applied the same criteria to two other national tax resolution companies. Complaint counts grow with the number of clients, so a larger firm will usually have more; don't read raw counts as a ranking.

What you can do yourself through the IRS

Many of the services tax relief firms sell are IRS programs you can apply for directly. The FTC advises that no company can guarantee a result, because only the IRS or your state decides who qualifies, and warns against paying a whole fee up front (FTC consumer alert).

IRS option

Who it fits

2026 cost to apply

Short-term payment plan

Can pay within 180 days; under $100,000 to apply online

$0

Long-term payment plan

Needs monthly payments; $50,000 or less to apply online

$29 online with direct debit, $69 online otherwise; $107 or $178 by phone, mail or in person; reduced or waived for low income

Offer in compromise

Can't realistically pay in full

$205 application fee plus a first payment (20% of a lump-sum offer); waived for low income

Currently Not Collectible

Can't pay basic living costs and the tax

No fee; the debt isn't forgiven and interest continues

Before paying anyone to file an offer, run your numbers through the IRS's free Offer in Compromise Pre-Qualifier. The IRS has warned that "OIC mills" charge steep fees for offers that taxpayers don't qualify for (IRS). Our guides explain how an IRS offer in compromise works and how to apply for an IRS payment plan.

If your income is low, a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic can represent you in collection matters for free or a small fee, usually when the amount in dispute is under $50,000.

How to check any tax relief company before you pay

1.       Ask for the name of the enrolled agent, CPA or attorney who will handle your case, and look them up in the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers. Some credentialed professionals opt out of the directory, so a missing name is a question to ask, not proof of a problem.

2.       Confirm that person will sign Form 2848, the power of attorney that lets an eligible representative deal with the IRS for you.

3.       Get the total fee, what each phase covers, and the refund terms in a signed agreement.

4.       Ask which IRS program they expect you to qualify for and why, then check it against the IRS tools above.

5.       Read the newest one-star and five-star reviews on at least two platforms, plus the BBB complaints page.

6.       Be wary of guaranteed results, "pennies on the dollar" promises, or pressure to pay before anyone has reviewed your IRS transcripts.

If you've received IRS letters, our guide to IRS notices when you're overdue explains each deadline, and the IRS Fresh Start program guide covers the relief options in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tax Hardship Center legit?

It is a registered California company, Tax Hardship Center LLC, accredited by the BBB since 2018 with an A- rating. We found no regulatory or court enforcement action naming it as of October 29, 2026. Customer reviews are mixed, with recurring complaints about communication and refunds.

What do Tax Hardship Center reviews say?

Reviews are split. The BBB customer average is 3.55 out of 5 from 114 reviews and Trustpilot shows 2.9 from 66, while ConsumerAffairs shows 5.0 from 9. Positive reviews describe resolved balances; negative ones describe slow communication and fees paid without results.

How much does Tax Hardship Center charge?

The company doesn't publish prices. Review sites report an investigation fee of about $295 to $495, followed by a resolution fee reported between roughly $2,250 and $6,500. Get the full price and refund terms in writing before you sign.

Does Tax Hardship Center offer a money-back guarantee?

The company referred to a 14-day money-back guarantee in a 2026 BBB complaint response, and review sites describe the same term. We didn't find the written terms on its website, so ask for them before paying.

Can I settle my tax debt without a company?

Yes. You can apply for IRS payment plans, an offer in compromise or Currently Not Collectible status yourself, and low-income taxpayers can get free or low-cost help from a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic. A professional can help with complicated cases, but no company can get you a program the IRS wouldn't otherwise approve.

Our take

Tax Hardship Center is an established company with a mid-range record: accredited and responsive to BBB complaints, but with unpublished pricing and a steady stream of reviews about communication and refunds. If you talk to it, or to any tax resolution firm, ask for the representative's name and credentials, the full fee schedule and the refund terms in writing, then compare that with what you could do through the IRS yourself. For help weighing your options, see our tax resolution page.

This review is general information, not legal or tax advice. Facts about Tax Hardship Center, Optima Tax Relief and Anthem Tax Services were checked on October 29, 2026 and can change. Ooraa, Inc. is a lead generation and marketing company and does not itself provide tax resolution, debt settlement or legal services.
